Info: This is a beautiful example of a period 45 star flag. 45 Star flags are relatively common in the marketplace, however what sets this piece apart from others is its construction and the way the stars are applied to the canton. By the time 45 star flags were mass produced, sewing machines had gotten more advanced. Most 45 star flags (and flags after this time period) have double appliquéd stars with the ‘zig zag’ pattern of stitching seen on most modern flags.

This specific flag has big beautiful stars that were painted on the canton in perfect 8,7,8,7,8,7 offset rows. These were likely stenciled on. Usually flags with painted stars were made hastily in areas with minimal time/materials, however some used painted stars for their reflective property at night, especially at sea (where this flag was likely used). The flag retains its original toggle and rope.

Condition: Has holes and repairs on the fly end. Canton is in great shape. Gorgeous piece
