2 Rare 1914 - 1918 Engine Co. #34 Fire Department Buffalo NY Ledger Books 731pp:
$299.99

Description: TWO Antique Handwritten Ledger Books from Engine Company #34 of the Buffalo NY Fire Department. There is a little time between the two ledgers so they are not perfectly continuous, but it is the same company and contains many of the same peoples names. The events of each day roughly translated to a ledger page.
  • Ledger 1 begins March 24, 1914 and ends on March 4, 1915.
  • Ledger 2 begins November 6, 1917 and ends on July 31, 1918.

They contain very precise information for all of the time accounted for. Much of it is which men were on watch and the corresponding times they were on watch, but every detail is logged down like roll calls, inspections, who was on meals, counts of equipment (including horses), meetings with other fire stations, men on vacation, etc.

Every fire call and other various responses are also logged and these contain precise streets and intersections to where they went. Some report fire hydrants out of commission. Many of these calls are to locations on prominent downtown Buffalo streets. There are about 731 pages of handwriting and it\'s a bit of work to read as they are in different hands. I have only scratched the surface. Each entry is an additional event and there are roughly 7000 - 8000 entries. These ledgers paint an extremely comprehensive look into the workings of this Buffalo Fire Company from 1914 to 1918.

They attended a wide range of calls, many of them marked \'Gen Call\' in the margin which is helpful to find some interesting material. Some of the random calls include:

  • Call concerning a bad hole on Forest Ave just East of Grant
  • Manhole cover broken on North Side of Swan Street
  • Hydrant at Forest & Grant out of commission
  • Hydrant out of Commission on Perry Street
  • Grass fire
  • All members of Buffalo Red Cross Society could march in a parade in fire uniforms
  • Keep East Side of Bailey Ave Bridge over Buffalo River slow
  • Water Shut off on Seneca St. between Babcock & Milton
  • Have each member of your company fill out W.S.S. pledge card
  • Water turned off in the Pierce Plant until further notice (Pierce Arrow?), then water all night in the Pierce Plant
  • and hundreds more

It appears that Buffalo Fire Department Engine Company 34 is still operative and one of 19 Buffalo stations.

Measurements: each ledger is 9\" by 14 1/8\"Condition: Good to Fair. Exterior of the ledgers and bindings are fair/poor. Structurally, they aren\'t great. Bindings lean right so that front boards overlap back boards at fore edge. Red leather over spine of one ledger is gone and the leather on the other one has split and come up. General dust, toning and light soiling to the exterior covers and page edges. Consistent dust and toning to interior pages. Some pages have been torn from one ledger, but it doesn\'t appear they held important content. Another page has torn loose and is tucked into pages. With all of that said there is well over 700 pages of handwritten content all preserved very well. Please inspect the photos.Shipped FREE via USPS with appropriate care... Thank YOU!Payment
I have had to take precautions because of people not paying. You will have 4 days to pay, then an unpaid item case will be opened. From this point you will have another 4 days to pay. That\'s EIGHT total days, however if you don\'t pay the case will close and show on your record. At this time the item will be offered to the next highest buyer or re-listed. A case HAS to be opened to recoup selling fees.Shipping
I only ship within the US or to eligible Countries through the Global shipping program (however I don\'t use this for all items). If it doesn\'t say I ship to your Country in shipping details, then I won\'t, no exceptions, sorry. The shipping service will depend on the buyers location and the package weight. I predominantly use Priority Mail unless an item qualifies for First Class, however I will use Parcel Select in some instances particularly if you live out West. I am not a business and I reuse boxes and packaging so my packages aren\'t always the prettiest, but I do spend a lot of time and effort in ensuring items are packed with care, handled fast and shipped using an expedited service whenever possible.offers/Offers
I will NOT end items early via accepting a buy it now price or even respond to people offering amounts in exchange for me ending the item early. If I am selling an item via sale it will not end prematurely unless I made a mistake in the listing or the item was lost/broken. Please keep in mind I like to use free shipping and shipping prices fluctuate quite a bit. This is a consideration during offers. I may sell an item cheaper to someone closer to me opposed to someone offerding out West because the shipping may be a lot cheaper.Returns/Refunds
I offer returns on all items except for items that are being sold broken for parts/fix. You will have 14 days from the time you receive it to return it, no questions asked. If you simply don\'t like it or it doesn\'t fit then you are accountable for the return shipping. If i make an error in the listing (and I will from time to time) then I will pay for the shipping back to me. I will make mistakes. However, threatening to escalate cases etc. won\'t make the process any more enjoyable. I have been accused of all sorts of things while selling on this platform, but when I make a mistake in a listing or an item doesn\'t function properly YOU WILL BE FULLY REFUNDED and I will lose money on shipping to and fro. Just return the item, I will refund you every time. I didn\'t get good response by deceiving people on purpose or taking short cutsresponse
I generally leave response AFTER the buyer. This is just a little extra confirmation that you received the item and you\'re happy with it. Regardless, many people still don\'t leave response but after a period of time (enough time where I can assume the item isn\'t getting returned) I will leave positive response whether you have or not.
I am not a business, but an individual who enjoys selling on very much. This is not my occupation, more a hobby. I source items from all over. Estate sales, garage sales, liquidations, sales, consignments for friends. I do my best to keep buyers happy and them offerding risk free. If I make a mistake I will go out of my way to make things right and I believe my response is a testament to that. THANK YOU!
