1st ISRAELI ARMY IDF PASSOVER HAGGADAH 1949 JUDAICA Israel Rabbi Goren Jewish
Description
This is the very first Passover Haggada published by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in Nissan (April) 5649 (1949)!
All subsequent Pessach haggadot published by the Army were different and more elaborate but since this Hagada was published in a rush right after the 1948 war of Liberation, the Army used the plates of another no-frills type Haggada published in the previous year by the Lewin-Epstein Jerusalem Publishing Company. The big difference between that edition and this is the fact that in the inner cover (see picture below) there\'s a letter addressed to the soldiers from the first Chief Rabbi of the IDF, Shalom Goronshick (later to become the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Shlomo Goren, liberator of Jerusalem)!
In the forward he writes:\"After 2000 years of physical & spiritual slavery, we have merited to celebrate the Festival of freedom...the light of redemption and freedom which has shone over the skies of Israel has shined upon us anew and just as we left Egypt and saw the miracles of G-d, so too we saw in the War of Independence that we waged in our land. Raise high the flag of freedom that you have acquired by your hands in great bravery and self sacrifice! Till we shall envision the complete Redemption and celebrate the Festival of Passover in the Temple of G-d in Jerusalem, that shall be rebuilt! Shlomo Goronschick, Chief Rabbi of the IDF!\"
This Haggada was ACTUALLY used by an Israeli soldier during that tumultuous & historic period in Jewish History. There are minor stains to prove it! I cannot verify if it was used at the front watching over our borders from our Arab foes; or was used in the comfort of ones home, amidst family and friends. BUT, what I can vouch for is the feeling you and your family will experience when you will celebrate this coming passover Seder with this Haggada on the table! It will make an everlasting impression to all those present; to be able to hold a piece of history and impart that to your children and grandchildren, and truly say as the author of the haggada said, \"In every generation they arise up to destroy us, but you Almighty saves us from their hands!\" THAT IN ITSELF is worth all the money in the world! NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM!
This hagada is quite rare as most of these haggadot were discarded in the shamus (genizah) after use and were never to be seen again.
