This Pin was issued and sold in China circa 1966 - 1971 during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (aka Cultural Revolution), which was launched by Chairman Mao Zedong to preserve Chinese communism and to re impose Mao Zedong Thought (Maoism).

The pin displays a profile image of Mao with jet planes and war ship and sunflowers.

The Cultural Revolution, formally known as the GreatProletarian Cultural Revolution, was a sociopolitical movement in Chinafrom 1966 until 1971, launched by Mao, the Chairman of theCommunist Party of China (CPC) and founder of the People\'sRepublic of China (PRC).

Its stated goal was to preserve Chinese communismby purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinesesociety, and to re-impose Mao Zedong Thought (known outside China as Maoism)as the dominant ideology in the PRC. The Revolution marked Mao\'s return tothe central position of power in China after a period of less radicalleadership to recover from the failures of the Great Leap Forward, whichcaused the Great Chinese Famine (1959–61). However, the Revolution failed toachieve its main goals.

Launching the movement in May 1966 with the help ofthe Cultural Revolution Group, Mao charged that bourgeois elements hadinfiltrated the government and society with the aim of restoring capitalism. Maocalled on young people to \"bombard the headquarters\", and proclaimedthat \"to rebel is justified\".

The youth responded by forming Red Guards and\"rebel groups\" around the country. A selection of Mao\'s sayingswere compiled into the Little Red Book, which became a sacred text forMao\'s personality cult. They held \"denunciation rallies\"against revisionists regularly, and grabbed power from local governments andCPC branches, eventually establishing the revolutionary committees in 1967.The committees often split into rival factions and became involved in armedfights known as \'violent struggles\', to which the army had to be sent torestore order.

Mao declared the Revolution over in 1969,but the Revolution\'s active phase would last until at least 1971,when Lin Biao, accused of a botched coup against Mao, fled and died in a planecrash.

In 1972, the Gang of Four rose to power butwere arrested in 1976 following Mao’s death.

This underground pinback button pin or badge relates to the Hippie (or Hippy ) Counterculture Movement of the psychedelic Sixties (1960s and Seventies (1970s). That movement included such themes and topics as peace, protest, civil rights, radical, socialist, communist, anarchist, union labor strikes, drugs, marijuana, pot, weed, lsd, acid, sds, iww, anti draft, anti war, anti rotc, welfare rights, poverty, equal rights, integration, gay, women\'s rights, black panthers, black power, left wing, liberal, etc. progressive political movement and is guaranteed to be genuine as described.
