This incredible Church Sized Crucifix with Corpus was created in the 1960\'s by an unknown artist and was used for many, many years by the Benedictine Nuns in Mount Angel, Oregon.
This is an amazing work of Mid-Century Abstract Art and is indicative of the 1960\'s/early 1970\'s art style. The Crucifix is a massive 55\" inches tall (that\'s nearly 5 FEET, folks!) and over 3 Feet wide (38\" inches). This is a Church-sized Crucifix and was I believe used in one of their Chapels on the campus of their school and Convent.
The Crucifix is lit from inside and has stained glass paneling throughout. The Corpus is solid, hand carved and shaped cement or similar material. The artist carved and filed the Corpus into shape, sculpting the face and crown.
The Crucifix has extension steel mounts on the back so that when the Cross is mounted on the wall it will hover about 5\" inches from the surface.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own an incredible work of art, specifically designed for and used by Benedictine Catholic Nuns. The stylization of this incredible piece is so indicative of the 1960\'s \"Age of Aquarius\" Art, yet it represents the Catholic Church, one of the very things that the free movement of the 1960\'s was trying so hard to break free from. The blending of these two very different mindsets is mixed into this incredible symbol of Catholicism.
In a sense, it\'s as if Jesus is trying hard to say, \"I\'m hip\". :^)
The work is unsigned and I spoke to a couple of the Sisters and no one recollects who made the piece for them.
This incredible work of art will be professionally crated for shipment and can be shipped anywhere in the US or overseas. Buyers in the US pay a flat shipping rate of $185. Overseas buyers will pay actual shipping.
