On 12 November 1942 the German U-130 got into the transportanchorage off Fedala, Morocco, and at sunset torpedoed three transportsanchored there: first EDWARD RUTLEDGE (AP-52), then HUGH L. SCOTT (AP-43), thenTASKER H. BLISS (AP-42). It hit each with two torpedoes, the first two inseparate salvoes, the third in one. The first two sank soon after being hit,the burning hulk of the third sank early on 13 November.
TASKER H. BLISS SS was an American Troop Transport Ship of12,568 tons built in 1920. She was formerly called President Cleveland 1942. Onthe 12th November 1942 she was torpedoed by U-130 and sunk with the loss of 44 of her crew.
We have other vintage tobacciana, food, & beverage advertising listed - This has been in our collection a long time & we\'ve never seen another like it! Very hard-to-find-example. Up for your consideration is this Gorgeous RARE Vintage Historic Paper Labeled LA FLOR DE LA ISABELA LONGFELLOWS Island of Luzon of the Philippines Wood Cigar Box loaded with original labels & tax/import stamps....including the ultra rare 1931 import stamp showing this was carried aboard the ship liner S.S. President Cleveland to the port of San Francisco. (The SS Pres Cleveland was a very unlucky ship - struck a rock same year as this box in 1931 Hong Kong/had to be repaired - later torpedoed by German Uboats & sunk with high loss of life 1942) This cigar box later ended up for sale in Alabama as there is an Alabama tax stamp. Next to that is the yellow & Green perforated Federal U.S. tax stamp. Also are the Internal Revenue stamps for the Philippine Islands. Factory District No. 1 Manila P.I. Other labels indicate these were Isabela Longfellows cellophaned (10 count) to be sold at 5 cents each. It measures approximately 6“ x 4“ x 1 1/2“.
