Agriculture has played a dominant role in Virginia\'s development since the establishment of the English settlement at Jamestown in 1607. John Rolfe, a 17th-century colonist and husband of Pocahontas, introduced tobacco to England in 1614. Thereafter, tobacco was king in the Tidewater area colony throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. As Virginia\'s Piedmont region became more populated during the 19th century, the area became a major tobacco producer. The Piedmont region which grew bright tobacco also known as flue-tobacco consisted of Southside Virginia, east of the Blue Ridge mountains. This chair was manufactured by the Simmons Company, Kenosha, Wisconsin. In 1870, Zalmon G. Simmons opened his first factory in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He started out by manufacturing wooden telegraph insulators and cheese boxes. He branched into making bedsprings after receiving a patent for a woven-wire bedspring in payment of a debt. In 1876, Simmons became the first manufacturer to mass-produce woven wire mattresses. Simmons also made wooden folding chairs. These chairs were very popular for use in churches, schools, social halls and theaters.
