1904 2 Ottoman Turkey ARMENIAN inscription Pen Holder & Inkwell- Kharbert/ Harput

Two 19th c. antique, authentic, beautiful, engraved ARMENIAN scribe Pen Holders and Inkwells (qalamdan) from the Ottoman Empire (Western Armenia).

• DESCRIPTION:
  • 1)1st ONE (small, silver color)- Made from silver plated metal. This ink-well and pen case isintricately designed, with wonderful attention to details- beautifulfloral/ ornamental hand-carved & niello designs. The pen holders’ tops looks like crowns. The pen holder opens at the hinge (thehinge does not function perfectly, since a small piece on the hinge is broken(missing)) behind the crown at the top of the pen holder. The functionalink well is attached to the side & it is decorated with double-headed eagle.
    
  • 2) 2nd ONE (big, brass color)-Made from brass. This rare pen box & ink well has a few hand-carveddecorations & Armenian inscription & a date “1904, Karapet Eaghupian” (\"1904. Կարապետ Եաղուպեան\"). The pen holders’ tops looks like crowns. The pen holder opens (becauseof its age wear, it does not lock well) at the hinge behind the crown at thetop of the pen holder. Thefunctional inkwell is attached to the side & it has some signs of repair (between pen-case & the ink-well)
    
• ORIGIN/ MADE IN: Ottoman Turkey (Western Armenia). We acquired these items from an estate sale of one Armenian family in Nor Kharberd village* ( Rep. of Armenia (Eastern Armenia)), who in 1940s repatriated to Armenia from Syria, where they appeared after the forced deportation from their hometown Kharbert/ Harput (Western Armenia, now Turkey) by the Turkish militants. Base on the family members these items used to belong to their great-grandfather Karapet Yaghupian, who in 1880s-1890s used to teach in \"Smbatian Armenian Collage\"**

    The ancient town and citadel called Kharput (Kharpert), which means \"rocky fortress\" in Armenian, was built by the first Armenian kings about five km (3.1 miles) from modern Elazığ. However, very little written material about this city reached our day. It is possible that Harput stands on or is near the site of Carcathio-certa in Sophene, reached by Corbulo in A.D. 65. The early Muslim geographers knew it as Ḥiṣn Ziyād, but the Armenian name, Khartabirt or Kharbirt, whence Kharput and Harput, was generally adopted in time...
    Ottoman Harput and Mamûretü\'l-Azîz
    Harput and its vicinity fell under Turkish control in the year 1085 as the outcome of the Manzikert battle on August 26, 1071. The çubukoğulları, Artuqids, Sultanate of Rum, Ilkhanate, Beylik of Dulkadir, Aq Qoyunlu, Safavids and Ottomans had reigned in the region[6]
    Harput was an important station of the American missionaries for many years. The missionaries built Euphrates College, a theological seminary, and boys\' and girls\' schools. It operated until 1915 when its buildings were confiscated and used by the Ottoman army as barracks. In November 1895, government backed Turks and Kurds massacred, looted and burned the Armenian villages on the plain. In the same month Harput was attacked and the American schools were burned down. During the Armenian Genocide, many residents were killed.[9]
    Harput is still partly settled today, but due to its high elevation and lack of water it is slowly in the process of being abandoned, with most of its residents moving to Elazığ. Harput still has a few thousand inhabitants.
    Turkish Republican era
    From its foundation until the end of the World War II, the city\'s growth was somewhat irregular. While the town probably consisted of 10 to 12,000 inhabitants at the beginning of the World War I, the first census conducted by the Republic of Turkey in 1927 counted 20,052 inhabitants. This figure continued to rise to reach 25,465 in 1940, but the general shortages suffered during the World War II years by the neutral Turkey led to an exodus of population, reducing the population to 23,635. From then onward, the city has gone through uninterrupted growth. Harput, in the meantime, acquired the status of a township separated from Elazığ with a population of about 2000.
    Ecclesiastical history
    Harput has been the seat of a Syrian Orthodox bishop as early as the eleventh century, whose diocese was initially called Ḥiṣn Ziyād and later Harput. Unlike many Christian Diocese in Turkey, this one is still functioning even after the massacres that took place in the city during the Assyrian and Armenian Genocides, in which the bishop and most of his flock were killed.[10] The Diocese has two priests, with the main church being based in the ancient Merymana Kilisesi next to the wall of the old Fortress.
    An Armenian Catholic diocese of Kharput was created in 1850, but was not re-established as residential diocese after the Armenian genocide, only as an Armenian Catholic titular.
    An Armenian Evangelical Church, built in the 19th century, survives as a ruinous shell in the middle of a car park.

    Խարբերդի բնակչությունը զբաղվում էր արհեստներով, երկրագործությամբ, առևտրով։ Հայերը հռչակված էին որպես հմուտ դերձակներ, կոշկակարներ, դարբիններ, թիթեղագործներ, հուսներ, կտավագործներ, ոսկերիչներ, կաշեգործներ, զինագործներ։ XIX դ վերջին նրանք առևտրական կապեր ունեին Հալեպի, Կ.Պոլսի, Տիգրանակերտի, Այնթապի, Սեբաստիայի, Մալաթիայի, Սամսունի, Թոխաթի, Վանի, Ադանայի, Արաբկիրի, Բալուի, Բիթլիսի և այլ շատ վայրերի հետ։ Վանի Գափամաջյան առևտրական ընկերությունը մասնաճյուղ ուներ Խարբերդում։ Քաղաքում կար շուրջ 100 խանութ։1880-1890-ին Խարբերդի հայ վաճառականները հայտնվեցին նաև արտասահմանյան շուկայում՝ Ռուսաստանում, Պարսկաստանում, Ֆրանսիայում, Անգլիայում, նույնիսկ Ամերիկայում։ Արտահանում էին բամբակ, բուրդ, կաշի, ցորեն, գարի, մետաքս, գինի, օղի, գորգեր, չորացված պտուղներ։ Տեղական հումքի հիման վրա ստեղծվեցին խոշոր եղել է հայ մշակույթի նշանավոր կենտրոն։ Դեռևս 1160 թ․-ի մի ձեռագրում նշվում է, որ այն գրված է «ի մայրաքաղաքին Խարբերդ»։ Ազգային-մշակութային կյանքում Խարբերդի դերը բարձրացավ XIX դ, և պատահական չէ, որ 1880-ական թթ այն հիշատակվում է որպես «գավառի Աթենք»։ Համազգային հռչակ էր վայելում Աստվածաբանական ճեմարանը, որ գործել է 1859-1915 թթ․-ին։ Այստեղ դասավանդում էին հայերեն, գրաբար և աշխարհաբար քերականություն, հայոց պատմություն, աստվածաբանություն, մարդակազմություն, փիլիսոփայություն, տիեզերագիտություն։ Ավելի քան 600 շրջանավարտ է տվել Եփրատ կոլեջը։ 1865 թ․-ին կազմակերպվեց կրթական և մշակութային «Սմբատյան ընկերություն»-ը, որը բացեց երկսեռ վարժառան։ 1880-ական թթ Խարբերդում բեմադրվեց առաջին ներկայացումը՝ «Քաջն Վարդան»-ը։ 1889-ին հայերն այնտեղ հիմնադրվեցին տպագրական գործը, 1909 թ․-ին հրատարակվեց «Եփրատ» թերթը։ Կանանց շրջանում իր գործունեությունը ծավալեց «Արաքս» և մշակութային վերելքին զուգընթաց 1880-ական թվականներին արագորեն աճում էր Խարբերդի բնակչությունը, որի մեծ մասը հայեր էին։ Բնակվում էին նաև թուրքեր, ասորիներ, քրդեր։ Այդ ժամանակից էլ ծայր առավ խարբերդցիների արտագաղթը՝ նախապես դեպի Կանադա, ապա՝ ԱՄՆ։ Արտագաղթը ուժեղացավ հատկապես 1895-1896՝ համիդյան ջարդերի ժամանակ։ 1914 թ․-ին Խարբերդը ուներ 18-20 հազար բնակիչ, որից մոտ 10 000 հայ։ 1915 թ․-ի հուլիսին սկսվեց հայերի զանգվածային բնաջնջումը։ 2500 և 3000 մարդուց բաղկացած 2 քարավանով, էլ Այն ճանապարհով, բռնագաղթեցվեցին դեպի Դեյր էզ-Զոր և ոչնչացվեցին անապատներում։
