Rare,highly collectible set of signature pieces from famed Jugenstil (German forArt Nouveau) artist Carl Deffner of Esslingen am Neckar, in southern Germany.
Whenit comes to Carl Deffner and Jugenstil/Art Nouveau, it doesn’t get better thanthis.
Thecarafe features embossed décor on its copper body, with brass thumb lift,handle, spout, footing and outer base. The inside of the carafe is galvanized.Sharing the carafe’s décor are 6 copper cups (extremely rare to findmatching cups with Deffner’s carafes today), which together with the carafe displaybeautifully on the round Deffner copper tray.
This carafeand cups were featured 30 years ago in an esteemed German collector’s magazineas one of Deffner’s finest works in Jugendstil creations (see photo). Photocourtesy of Deutsches Museum, Munich.
Thepieces bear his impressed mark of the crossed halberds, with “C.D.E.” (CarlDeffner Esslingen).
Condition:Tray’s bottom shows clear signs of wear, and the impression of the carafe andcups are visible on the surface (gone when placed on it). Carafe’s brassfooting is a “hammered” piece, so not perfectly round. Minor blemishingand dings on carafe and cups, very typical for its usage and 120+ year’s age. Reviewphotos carefully. Overall, this set is in superb condition.
Noneof these pieces have been cleaned/polished. Original state, with plenty ofpatina throughout.
Carafemeasures 14” tall. Each cup measures 3.5” tall. The plate measures 12.75”across.
