Louis Ghémar opened his first studio in Brussells in 1856 with photographer Robert Sévérin. When Sévérin leaves, Ghémar partners with his half-brother Léon Auverlaux and the firm becomes known as Ghémar Frères. Ghémar knows Nadar in the 1860s and travels with him to Switzerland. Although Ghémar died around 1873-74, the firm remained under the Ghémar Frères name until 1894 when the studio closed and the inventory was acquired by their competitor and neighbor studio Jules Géruzet.
