1826 ANTIQUE WORKBOOK with FOLK ART WATERCOLORS of SHIPS by JOHN HOPKINS, RI JOHN HOPKINS, JAMESTOWN, RHODE ISLAND, 1810-1835. This is a wonderful school mathematics workbook with numerous watercolor sketches of sailing and steam vessels along with carefully copied manuscript mathematics formulas and problems. Watercolors include a vessel titled “United States, 84 guns.” (Note: There was a frigate named United States that had 44 guns. . . ?), a steam sailer, a distressed sailing ship headed for a port, and more. John Hopkins signed his name five times at the bottom of his workbook pages, including dates of January 2, 11, 18, and 25, plus February 13, 1826. John Hopkins would have been 16 years old when he did this book. He was born July 30, 1810, and died May 28, 1835. He is buried in Jamestown, RI.
Condition is fair (no covers), with paper losses, ragged edges, an approximate 1 inch X 3 inch piece excised from one page, and a few tears. Most of the losses do not affect content. The first page number is 3, from which I conclude that the first two pages and the last two page are likely missing. There are 84 pages. The book measures approximately 8 inches by 13 inches.
