M1818 Nathaniel Starr Contract Cavalry Saber, Original and Complete with ORIGINAL Arsenal Shine on blade with No knicks or pitting or rust on either sword blade, hilt or scabbard and ORIGINAL Black Paint and Finish!Has been professionally sharpened and has a razor\'s edge many years ago. Possible Civil War use by Southern Cavalry due to scarcity of arms. Scabbard has most of Original Black Paint and is in Excellent Shape with the usual dent to prevent rattle while carrying. Still has the Original Leather Washer at the hilt to protect scabbard throat.
Nathan Starr was the leading sword maker in America from 1798 to 1830 from Middletown, Connecticutwhose firm produced the military edged weapons on contract to the US Government.This hefty cavalry saber is a no-nonsense enlisted man’s edged weapon and one of 10,000 under this contract.
Saber follows a modified design criterion specified on January 11, 1813 that incorporated asharper curve to the blade, a pronounced angle to the hilt and a wider opening between gripsand knucklebow. Knucklebow exhibits the reverse-P pattern and is pierced near the pommel fora sword knot. Saber specimen features a hefty iron hilt matched to a 34” long, curved,single-edged fullered steel blade with a pronounced clipped point.The robust blade measures almost 2” wide with a ¼” thick back and has no etchingsor engravings save the maker’s stamp on the obverse ricasso.Stamping reads “P (proved) / LS / N.STARR / US” in sharp, crisp marks. LS was Luther Sage who inspected the blade for acceptance into the US arsenal.Blade hasthe original leather washer to keep the hilt from hitting the open end of the scabbard. Bladeedge is very sharp with no knicks or cracks. VERY CLEAN with no corrosion or rust pitting to blade!
