L\'Office de la semaine sainte, en latin et en françois, à l\'usage de Rome et de Paris : Imprimé par ordre de Madame Marie-Adelaïde de France. A Paris: chez Guillaume Desprez, c1754.
Notable and very interesting royal binding on this French Devotional book with central gilt armorial crest and signature of
MADAME ADELAIDE
Princess Adélaïde of Orléans
An interesting and historic example of this popular Catholic BOOK OF HOURS, a devotional/prayer book, with an unknown gilt arms on each cover; certainly Royal as indicated by the crown at the top. A rare example of a censured royal binding, with the arms on the covers printed in gilt, probably for the use of the Princess\'s house, later the crowns and side in gilt rubbed away in censure. ----o0o----Lightly worn contemporary plush red leather boards with gilt borders in an alternating floral and crown design, the center of each board with the armorial crest in gilt, the spine with raised bands and gilt decor with additional floral decor, as shown. Some scuffing and rubbing, as well as rounding and exposure at the corners. Crests with the crown as well as the left hand portion of the crest rubbed away on both boards, surely showing dissatisfaction with the ruler. Hinges intact. Marbled endpapers w/ gilt page edges; front marbled EP detached with some edgewear. Binding and content decent; illustrated with a few devices. Text in both Latin and French. Consists of Catholic devotions, holy offices, and prayers of the Holy Week, both Use of Rome and Use of Paris. SIGNED ON THE FRONT BLANK INDICATING AGAIN THE BOOK WAS OWNED BY MADAME ADELAIDE AND PASSED ON TO A FRIEND, JEANNE NICOLLE MAURETTE (\" This book which served Madame Adelaide the aunt of Louis 16th was given by her to Jeanne Nicolle Mourette.\"). Additional tipped in French MSS and printed paper, dated 1846, and additional signature below Madame Adelaide statement showing the book made its way into the congregation at Notre Dame of Rheims. Measures 8\" x 5.25\" x 1.75\". Calls for [2], XXXXIV, [2], 631; our copy lacking the main title (but retaining the half title), and lacking one leaf in the first section (xxxxiii/xxxxiv), else complete. Good luck!
