16 Antique Playing Cards of the 17th and 18th Century
These are original antique playing cards - a mixed collection, some of which I have not been able to identify. I believe some of them have not been previously been documented, so some rarities. These are not reproductions. They have belonged to my family for 50 years.
They are all remarkably sound and in good condition for paper ephemera of this date. There are some tiny blemishes and flaws which are apparent on the photographs. All card backs are plain and unmarked other than usual age patina and scuffing.
I believe they include cards from: The Rebellion or The Revolution pack; Dr Sacheverell by Gabriel Pink 1709-11; The Rye House Plot \"The Late Horrid Fanatical Conspiracy\" 1683 and others I cannot identify. My identification source is \'A Handful of History\' (1978) by JRS Whiting which shows images of some of these cards.* Some of these are likely to be previously undocumented.
* With thanks to John Sings at Gamesetal and the English Playing Card Society for his direction to this source and his advice on these cards. These 16 cards have been in my family for the last 50 years and their previous provenance is not known. They are presumed to be part of a job-lot from an sale in the 1960s with some book and paintings.
Please note, the photographs show the cards as darker than they are. I can only show 12 images above, so have had to create some composites and omit the card backs. If you wish to see a complete set of 32 images, please contact me. I am happy to answer any questions.PostageSignatures will be required on delivery in the UK and abroad.
