Antique stoneware stein from Germany.

Features a hand-painted porcelain image set in a  hinged pewter lid.

Stamped "1 L" for one litre capacity in the clay near the rim.

The lid is hand monogrammed with "T A" or possibly "F A" in script.

The hand painted image is a man holding a flask while leaning against a sign post... with a cap perched on top of it. The man appears to be drunk- His twisted walking stick hangs from his wrist- His patched trousers have seen better days.

His head is turned, and he looks at a church steeple poking out above some trees beyond a small body of water. The sign post (in very tiny letters) reads: Nah Gorge (I think). While Nah translates to Close (as in near), I'm not sure what Gorge (or possibly Gerge) means. Any suggestions?

In the upper left section is painted the sun (or possibly moon) smiling down on our weary traveler.

Painted in the upper portion of the scene are the words, "Drink einmal Bruder!" (Translated: Drink once, Brother!)

The colors are bright and the painting is very well done, very detailed! There are some areas where the colors are slightly faded and the lettering rubbed.

The pewter lid moves freely.

The applied handle is not straight, as you can see from the images - It's a fine example of early ergonomics.

The exterior of the mug is very lightly textured with a grooved comb pattern.

The bottom of the stein shows this same pattern, allbeit with slightly deeper grooves and in a swirl (or thumbprint) pattern.

Unsigned, the mug is in Good to Very Good Condition with little wear and tear. There are no breaks, chips, or cracks. I really don't see any crazing, either. Dated mid 19th century.

Measures approximately 8" tall x 4" diameter.
