TheNewMasses,published from 1926 until 1948, was an American Marxist magazineclosely associated with the Communist Party, USA. With the coming ofthe Great Depression in 1929 America became more receptive to ideasfrom the political Left and TheNew Massesbecamehighly influential in intellectual circles. The magazine has beencalled “the principal organ of the American cultural left from 1926onwards.\" The1940s brought significant philosophical and practical troubles to thepublication, as it faced the ideological upheaval created by theMolotov-RibbentropPact (aswell as blowback from its support for the MoscowTrials),while at the same time facing virulent anti-communismandcensorship during the war. In 1948, editor BettyMillard publishedthe influential article \"Woman Against Myth\", whichexamined and explained the history of the women\'s movement in theUnited States, in the socialist movement, and in the USSR. Thethirteen non-consecutive issues offered here, published by WeeklyMasses of New York, cover the period from August 19, 1941 until June2, 1942 – a time shortly before and after the United States entryinto World War II. Allof the issues contain 32 pages, staple bound, that measure about 9 ¼x 12 ¼ inches. The pages are all tanned, but the text andillustrations are all clear and easily read. There is occasionalbrittleness and chipping along the edges and semi-detached ordetached pages. No pages are missing.
