Stoker Petty Officer Edwin Howells was born on the 13/1/1884 in in Pembroke, Wales. A farm labourer by trade, he enlisted into the Royal Navy on the 24/11/1903 as a Stoker 2nd class. He served on a variety of H.M. ships and shore bases including: Vivid, Medea, Vivid II (Stokers and Engine Room Artificers School in Devonport), Commonwealth, Leander (depot ship for torpedo boat destroyers), Donegal, Aboukir, Indus (Devonport, part of the stoker training establishment), H.M.S. Carnarvon 5/3/1912 - 31/3/1913 which was sunk during the Battle of the Falklands 1914), Egmont (Malta), Highflyer.
During WW1 he served aboard H.M.S. Erin (Dreadnought) 2/8/1914 - 27/2/1917 which fought at the Battle of Jutland (31/5/1916 - 1/6//1916), H.M.S. Diligence (depot ship for the destroyer -M.S. Nonsuch) 29/5/1917 - 31/7/1918, remained on the Nonsuch, but the depot ship was moved to the H.M.S. Woolwich 1/8/1918 - 31/1/1919.
Post war: Vindictive II 1/2/1919 - 15/3/1919 and to shore for demobilisation. He died in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, Wales in 1969.
