View Larger Image   Breast Shield, Native American, Vintage   Description: This breast shield was made by Native Americans. I believe the base construction is of deer hide. Measures 21 in. diameter. Decorated with abalone shell buttons, beads, Leather, triangular pieces and what appears to be a red vegetable dye painted design. The back has bent wood for frame and handles. In good, undamaged condition. I'm not familiar or knowledgeable enough to describe the significance of the decorations but this woould make a fantastic wall hanging. The tribe of Chippewa was predominant in my area of Minnesota so perhaps this is of their heritage? Acquired from an estate sale near Mille Lacs Lake, Mn. I think this would be from the 1940's era, perhaps earlier.
