This bowl has some interesting manufacturing marks. During Victorian times (and somewhat before), manufacturers used a clay barrel-type structure to fire their wares in. The barrel was called a saggar, and its job was to ensured that all pieces fired evenly. In order to produce as many items as possible at one time, and to ensure that the glaze of one piece did not melt into the glaze of another, the bowls would be stacked up and separated by thimbles or "stilts", which left depressions in the pottery. The pieces on the bottom of the saggar supported the whole stack and the depressions were sometimes fairly noticeable.

Such is the case with this bowl. There are two sets of stilt marks, one on the bottom of the piece and the other on the interior of the bowl, which shows how the pieces were stacked together for firing. As I said, very interesting!
