Miniature portrait of an early Victorian gentleman - he sits with an open book and a statuette on the table or desk in front of him, with an elaborately curtained window at the side. Probably an amateur painting, but has charm and great detail. Painted on ivory. Mounted on a brass frame, with dark stained wood surround. Measures framed: 14 cm square (5.1/2 inches). Round section of painting is 7 cm diameter (2.3/4 inches).
Condition is very good - some overpainting in a curve at the very bottom, where paint may have worn off against the frame, and possible overpainting to the forehead where there appears to be a mark painted over. Interesting little painting. Circa 1840.
